Although they are essentially the same drawing , the difference between these two configuration is obvious; one has volume and the other has been elevated from a sheet.
The second image can easily be made using a piece of thin cardboard by cutting slits and scoring (Can you come up with the design?) . It can even be collapsible.
This would also make a good lattice or stepping plate.
Initially I designed a 2D pattern and by shading it I gave them 3 dimensionality.
