The following surfaces or structures are all derived from 2D patterns and then shaded.

On close inspection it is not difficult to find several elementary shapes such as squares, equilateral triangles, hexagons. When they are arranged in certain order, they carry 3D information.

Do you see only pattern below or 3D structures as well? Learn to train your eye to see hidden 3D info in patterns. One thing  I notice is that combination of rhombuses, triangles, squares and hexagons display this sort of characteristics, where our eyes can relatively easily discern hidden info.

The next image is elevated into 3D by shading. 3D implication becomes obvious.

Another irregular surface derived from a pattern. Are you convinced that this is a feasible surface?

A surface modified from stacks of cubes. The design might have an application in real life.
